Our mission

Futures shaped by who you are, not who you happen to know.

We empower students who lack a career network with the access, relationships, and real-world experiences that turn potential into opportunity, so every motivated young person can see, reach, and pursue a future worthy of their potential.

Fueling Potential · Igniting Futures
Who we serve

High school students in South Florida who already know the field they're passionate about but have a limited network on the inside to guide them.

Driven, focused students who know what they want. They just have little connection to that world, with few people to ask.

What stands in their way No mentor or guide in the field No way to see the work up close No connections to lean on

It's what you know and who you know.

Breaking into almost any field takes two things many students never get: real exposure to how the work actually happens, and a personal connection to someone who does it.

One is what you know; the other is who you know. Most students lack both, not for any lack of ability or ambition, but for lack of access. Fuel the Future gives them that access.

What we believe

Talent Is Everywhere. Opportunity Should Be Too.

01

Now's the Time to Start

High school is the perfect moment to start building a professional network. You're not behind, you're early. A head start now pays off for years to come.

02

Relationships Open Doors

Who a student knows shapes what feels within reach. A single real connection can change where their path leads.

03

Experience Beats Explanation

Hearing about a career only goes so far. Real understanding comes from experiencing it firsthand.

04

Everyone Deserves a Guide

No student should have to figure out their future alone. A mentor changes everything.

Apply

Join Fuel the Future.

Fuel the Future is built around two roles: students who join to break into the field they love, and professionals who mentor them along the way. Below is what each one involves, along with the link to apply. We're piloting now across South Florida.

For students

What's expected of students.

Fuel the Future is free, but it asks for your time and effort. Students who get the most out of it show up ready to learn and follow through.

  • Apply with a field you're genuinely passionate about.
  • Complete the virtual resume and LinkedIn workshop.
  • Meet with your mentor for scheduled meetings and do your homework in between.
  • Show up prepared and professional for your job shadow.
  • Reach out, follow up, and keep building your network after.

For professionals

How professionals help.

Fuel the Future runs on professionals willing to give students a look inside their world. Mentoring runs across the program, while hosting a shadow or joining the closing event is a lighter, one-time commitment. Choose the role that fits your schedule.

Mentor a student

Meet one-to-one with a student across the program, mostly conversation and guidance. You also either host their job shadow yourself or refer a friend in the field who can. You don't need to be senior, just willing to help them navigate and make a few introductions.

Host a job shadow

Mentors, or a friend in the field they bring in, open a workplace for one supervised day to a small group of students, so the students are comfortable and make connections with each other too. A walk-through to meet the team, a look at a day in the life, and an honest conversation about how you got in.

Join the closing event

Spend an evening at the closing event, where students present their culminating projects and professionals connect with them over speed networking. Mentors come to celebrate their students, and it's also a low-pressure way for someone new to see the program up close and decide whether they'd like to mentor down the line.

Why it matters

Talent isn't enough on its own.

Breaking into a field takes seeing how the work really happens, and knowing someone who already does it. Students whose families have professional connections get both for free. A parent makes a call, a family friend offers a day at the office, and a door opens. Driven students without those connections get neither, and that gap has nothing to do with talent. It is purely about access.

The solution has two pillars.

Pillar one

Seeing the work up close

You can't pursue what you've never seen. A day inside a real workplace turns a vague idea of a field into a real, felt understanding of what the job actually is, and often reveals roles you never knew existed. It is not resume experience like an internship. It is the exposure that lets a student choose a direction with real information instead of a guess.

Increased College Aspirations

An OECD study across ten countries found that teenage job shadowing is linked to a greater likelihood of going on to university.

Greater Career Clarity

Students who observe real workplaces before age 15 report significantly higher career-decision clarity at 18, often by learning what they don't want.

More Than a Career Fair

Research finds a half-day of real workplace observation more impactful than several career talks at school. Direct contact beats being told about it.

Pillar two

Building a network

Opportunities come through people, not job postings. A student without a network isn't losing on a level field, they're often not in the room where the real chances get decided. The shadow is where the network starts, because meeting people during the day turns one visit into connections, and the program then teaches students to keep building it themselves.

Who You Know Matters

Studies estimate as much as 85% of jobs are filled through networking, and around 70% of openings are never publicly posted.

Referrals Make the Difference

A candidate who comes through a referral is roughly four to five times more likely to be hired than one who applies cold.

Closing the Network Gap

First-generation and lower-income students have far less access to the senior professionals whose connections unlock those referrals.

Together

Experience and Connections Depend on Each Other

Neither one is enough on its own. Real experience without connections is a single day that leads nowhere, and connections without experience are names a student has no reason to reach out to. Each one makes the other worth something. That is why Fuel the Future never treats them separately: the job shadow gives students the firsthand experience and is where their first real connections form, and the mentorship turns that day into a network they can keep building. Delivering both, together, is the gap we exist to close.

A note on the numbers: the "85% of jobs" and "70% never posted" figures are widely cited estimates drawn from industry surveys, so we treat them as approximate. The job-shadowing findings come from the OECD Career Readiness project and the National Career Development Association. Job shadowing is a day of observing and meeting people, not paid work experience, so we make the case for exposure and connections rather than the hiring outcomes tied to full internships.

The program

How the program works.

Fuel the Future is a free program for high-school students who already know the field they're passionate about but have no network in it. Students apply to join, then move through four steps.

1
Prep

Resume & LinkedIn build

Students apply with the field they're passionate about. Then it starts with the basics every professional has and most students don't: a short virtual session where a professional helps every student build a real resume and LinkedIn profile, with a take-home toolkit. It's the container they'll fill as the program goes on.

2
Map

Inside your field

With their mentor, each student maps the real careers inside the field they love, so a broad passion becomes a set of specific jobs. Guided by their own strengths, they pick the roles worth aiming the job shadow at.

Career mappingYour strengthsA target role
3
Experience

The job shadow

In the field they're passionate about, each student spends a supervised full day inside a real workplace, in two halves: a guided walk-through meeting people across different roles, then a deeper shadow with one host, with a small safe hands-on moment and an honest conversation about how they got in.

Safety first: every shadow happens with parental consent and full supervision, never solo, never labor.

4
Connect

Building your network

It doesn't stop at one visit. Students connect with the host on LinkedIn the same day, get a warm introduction from their mentor to another professional, and learn to reach new people on their own. One relationship grows into a real network they can keep building long after the program ends.

Founder, Fuel the Future

"I started Fuel the Future because opportunity often comes down to who you know, and not every student has that network. My goal is to build those connections, linking students with professionals who can mentor and guide them, and the experiences that lead them into the careers they're working toward."
